Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces Baltimore City Residents Comprise 51 Percent of Horseshoe Casino Workforce

Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced that more than 1,250 Baltimore City residents will be employed at the Horseshoe Baltimore casino, representing 51 percent of the staff hired as of August 21. After extensive recruitment and outreach efforts coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED), in partnership with Horseshoe Baltimore, city residents will comprise a majority of the more than 2,400 employees that will staff the gaming facility, which celebrates its grand opening tonight.

93 Baltimore City Students Graduate from Youth Opportunity (YO!)

Youth Opportunity (YO!) Baltimore hosted a special graduation event this evening for its 2014 class of 93 young adults who chose to pursue alternative education after facing challenges in traditional settings. The event honored 57 students who graduated from the YO! Academy, an alternative high school that operates in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools, and 36 young people who earned their Maryland high school diplomas through the city’s two YO! Baltimore centers in East and West Baltimore. 

Academy for College and Career Exploration Class of 2014 Celebrates Graduation

The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) hosted a special commencement Friday, May 30 for its 2014 class of 80 graduates. The ceremony was held at Johns Hopkins University’s Shriver Hall. “I am so proud of all of our graduates who have shown the fortitude and discipline required to complete this phase of their education,” said ACCE Principal Quinhon Goodlowe.

Fifty-seven students will graduate from the YO! Academy, an alternative high school that operates in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools. They will share the stage with 36 young people who earned their high school diplomas through the two YO! centers in East and West Baltimore. Ms. Shina Parker, a local entrepreneur and CEO, will deliver the keynote address.
